America, America, and Ed Sullivan
. . . I’m in acting school and want to be a singer and actress, and I know what all that travelling’s like. And another thing: I’ve been in thirteen different houses during my life, but gradually everything gets better and better, and one day I hope to be a star (‘hope’s’ the word) so that I can prove that I can do something too. And don’t ever worry, George, about going down the ladder, because you four have got what it takes like none of the other groups have got. It’s not your songs (though the words of your songs send me and bring back so many memories) or the way you stomp on the stage, or do your little solo bits on the guitar, but it’s just you, you’re natural, not like the others. That’s why you’re on top. I’m not trying to kid you, ’cause everyone has to go down sometimes, but you won’t for a long time, don’t worry. But the fans love you, really they do. Speaking as a fan myself, I know what it’s like . . . but it’s great to be able to write to you like this, George, ’cause you’ve probably gathered you’re my favourite Beatle. You put over sincerity and that counts a lot when you’ve got fans. I hope, by the way, that you enjoy America. Lots of people ask me if I think the Beatles will become American citizens after their stay but I know you well enough to say that you love your home (Liverpool) best, don’t you, George? But of course!
Oh, well . . . I hope I can come to your birthday party as I must talk to you, George, before I go bonkers. My friend at school went to your party last year. You came with the others to pick her up at her house. It was funny, really, ’cause Paul used her ‘lav’ and she would’nt let her mum clean the ‘lav’ out until – months later, it was. It started to smell so it had to be cleaned after long last. But it was funny, ’cause she was always up in that toilet.
From a letter
After some trouble over visas with the American authorities, the Beatles received an H2 category which was above H3 (trainees) but below H1 for ‘persons of distinguished merit and ability’. Their work permits were valid ‘as long as unemployed American citizens capable of performing this work cannot be found’.
A few days before the Beatles were to leave for the United States it was announced that in addition to appearing on the Ed Sullivan television programme they would give two concerts at Carnegie Hall. Within hours after the announcement was made all the tickets were gone. They were being paid $10,500 for two shows at Carnegie Hall, and the New York impresario Sidney Bernstein offered them $25,000 plus $5,000 for the British Cancer Fund if they would give one performance in the mammoth Madison Square Garden.
